Parenting Classes

Guiding Good Choices

The goal of the Guiding Good Choices program is to prevent substance abuse among teens by teaching parents of preteens and younger adolescents the skills they need to improve family communication and family bonding. The program draws on extensive research that demonstrates the critical importance of bonding in reducing or inhibiting adolescent participation in antisocial behaviors.

During the course of the Guiding Good Choices program, parents will learn specific strategies to help their children avoid drug use and other adolescent problem behaviors, and develop into healthy adults. Parents will learn to set clear family guidelines on drugs, as well as learn and practice skills to strengthen family bonds, help their children develop healthy behaviors, and increase children’s involvement in the family.

Since there is clear evidence that the child-rearing practices, attitudes, values, and behaviors of parents influence whether their children will use drugs, the Guiding Good Choices program is designed for parents. Education that begins during the preteen years and early adolescence is key for helping parents reduce their child’s risk for drug use as a teen.

The program consists of five 2-hour workshops.

Love and Logic

A loving, balanced approach

The Goal of Love and Logic is to help parents avoid negative interactions with their children that lead to neglect and abuse.

Children learn the best lessons when they’re given a task and allowed to make their own choices (and fail) when the cost of failure is still small. Children’s failures must be coupled with love and empathy from their parents and teachers.

This practical and straightforward philosophy is backed with 30 years of experience. Parents can apply it immediately to a wide range of situations instead of struggling with difficult counseling procedures.

Develop good parenting techniques with Love and Logic

Positive, loving tools for raising happy and well-behaved kids

Built around the science of caring, respectful relationships

Provides a variety of simple and effective strategies for parenting children birth to adulthood.

Specializes in solutions to challenges ranging from:

Toddler tantrums… to teen driving

Potty training… to their posts on Facebook

Refusing to eat peas….to refusing to do anything

Step-parenting, special needs and much, much more!

The “Love” in Love and Logic means that we love our kids so much that we are willing to set and enforce limits. This “Love” also means that we do so with sincere compassion and empathy.

The “Logic” in Love and Logic happens when we allow children to make decisions, make affordable mistakes and experience the natural or logical consequences. When we balance this with sincere empathy, they develop the following logic:

The quality of my life depends on the quality of my choices.

With the loving yet powerful tools of Love and Logic, we can help our children learn to make good choices and experience happy lives while maintaining their love and respect.

The program consists of six 2-hour workshops.
